Milli Vanilli

Rob Pilatus & Fabrice Morvan

In 1989 a group called Milli Vanilli, fronted by Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan released a successful album, Girl You Know It's True. The sound on the album was the brainchild of producer, Frank Farian. The group had several hit singles including, "Girl You Know It's True," "Baby Don't Forget My Number," "Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You" and "Blame It On The Rain."

However, it was soon revealed that Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan had not sung a note on the album. As it turned out, the talent behind the album consisted of professional and talented artists and musicians. Frank Farian personally selected the best in Europe to work on the album.

The Real Milli Vanilli is: Brad Howell, Jodie Rocco, Linda Rocco, John Davis and Charles Shaw.

The Real Milli Vanilli (1991)

Once Frank Farian revealed the truth about Milli Vanilli to the world, it left the world wondering who was behind the music. In 1991, Frank Farian got back together with the original singers and released, The Moment Of Truth.

While Frank Farian did invite most of the original talent back from, Girl You Know It's True, he didn't invite them all to be on the cover. Jodie Rocco and Linda Rocco both sang on The Moment Of Truth. However, he left Jodie Rocco and Linda Rocco off the cover of the album. Some say this is because they weren't African American. It is also interesting to note, Frank Farian also kept the original rapper from the song, "Girl You Know It's True," Charles Shaw off  The Moment Of Truth all together. This was probably due to the fact that Charles Shaw went public about Rob and Fab not singing when the scandal was still going on. (Frank Farian later paid Charles Shaw to retract his statements.)

The original vocalists from the first album, Girl You Know It's True were: Brad Howell, John Davis, Jodie Rocco, Linda Rocco and Charles Shaw. However, the only original members that were featured on the cover for this new album, The Moment Of Truth were Brad Howell and John Davis. The rest of the members were newly added.

The new members were:
Gina Mohammed
Ray Horton
Icy Bro

A Las Vegas woman who forced the Milli Vanilli scandal to go public hopes a planned film "will be some kind of vindication."

Jodie Rocco and her twin sister, Linda, were backup singers for the German-produced dance-pop duo that was stripped of a best new artist Grammy in February 1990 when the lip-synching scam was exposed.

Rocco, a public relations executive for nightclubs.com, said she gave Frank Farian, a powerful German music producer, an ultimatum at the time: Confess to the scheme, or she would blow the whistle.

Farian called a news conference and acknowledged the fraud but has "continued to lie and cover up," Rocco said.

She said in an interview Sunday that it is the first time she has divulged her role in exposing the scandal.

Milli Vanilli sold 30 million singles and 11 million albums before the con job was revealed. It turned out that Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus were models who couldn't sing. Pilatus died of a combination of drugs and alcohol in April 1998.

Through digital trickery in the recording studio, Farian produced three No. 1 hits, "Girl You Know It's True," "Baby Don't Forget My Number" and "Blame It on the Rain."

Digital fakery "was commonplace at the time," said Rocco, who moved from Germany to Las Vegas in 1990.

She and her sister received about $100,000 each for their efforts on all the projects. Asked what she thought she was cheated out of, Rocco said "between $8 (million) to $9 million," if given a standard 1 percent to 2 percent of the net earnings.
